The WellspringHeart program relies on four lifestyle components important to the heart disease reversal process – nutrition, exercise, stress reduction and group support. Each component is an equal part of the whole.
Participants are instructed by Registered Dietitians to reduce their dietary fat intake to 10% or lower, incorporating soy protein and plant-based nutrition principles to reduce cholesterol, manage weight and balance the body. Through experiential education, recipes and cooking demonstrations, participants acquire lifelong tools for a heart-healthy diet. Exercise professionals lead weekly instruction, and instill the importance of regular exercise as part of a healthy lifestyle. Stress management utilizing gentle stretching, breathing technique, relaxation, meditation and imagery, and group support provides a key component to participants’ overall success.
Each participant commits to:
- 96 hours of class time
- CT diagnostic angiogram at baseline and one year
- Diet modification to 10% fat
- Accumulating 3 hours of exercise per week
- Developing a daily stress management practice using yoga and relaxation techniques
- Participating in group support
The tools and values learned in the WellspringHeart program last far beyond the 12-week educational phase. Participants, seeing the change in their bodies and minds, readily commit to a life of heart-healthy behaviors.
- Average weight loss of 12.5 lbs
- LDL cholesterol levels below 90
- Decreasing dietary fat intake to 10%-15%
- 33% decrease in stress
- 21% increase in exercise capacity
