Supporting Research

Clinical trials of a program developed by Dean Ornish, MD determined that heart disease could not only be prevented, but reversed. Patients in these trials modified their lifestyle and behaviors to include a low-fat plant-based whole foods diet, exercise, stress reduction/yoga and group support.

Early Research (1977-1990)

Multiple projects with heart patients showing:

  • More than 90% reduction in angina
  • More than 50% improvement in exercise capacity
  • Improvements in blood flow to heart muscle
  • Improvements in heart muscle function

The Lifestyle Heart Trial (1990-1995)

Multiple projects with heart patients showing:

  • Randomized controlled trial of patients with severe coronary heart disease (CAD) with a duration of five years
  • 99% of patients stopped or reversed the progression of disease - measured by PET scan
  • Percent of artery narrowing improved in the experimental group and worsened in the control group
  • Total cardiac events - 2.5 times greater in the control group than in the experimental group
